Heaven itself is backing the WFP’s new campaign
One out of every nine people in the world goes to bed hungry every single night. Humankind is still wasting a huge amount of food. About a third of the food produced for human consumption is either lost or wasted. As a result, 1,300 million tonnes of food go to waste every year.
Action on this has been a long time coming. The problem isn’t just all the food we could have given to people that go hungry. It’s also about wasting money, manpower and resources like the energy, land, seeds and water that are used to produce food. On top of that, wasting food increases the emission of greenhouse gases and contributes to climate change.
The World Food Programme (WFP) has started a new campaign to combat this problem. The WFP’s #StopTheWaste campaign aims to raise awareness of this global problem and highlight simple solutions that we can all put into practice to avoid disaster. The main aim of #StopTheWaste is to raise public awareness of the importance of not wasting food.
What’s more, the WFP also helps small farmers with matters like storage and transport. This could also play a key role in helping avoid crops being ruined prematurely. The WFP’s Zero Food Waste programme helps families with small holdings in Africa. It helps them to buy new, better options for hermetic storage. It’s estimated that, by the end of the year, there will be half a million families of producers involved in the initiative.
